Description: The answer to Close Encounters is Hymn Of The Pleiades. This is a strictly groove track where the elements of ambient meets electronic funk and Hip Hop. Track was recorded, mixed and mastered using Mixcraft Pro Studio 6 software. Results were achieved by using a FATA Studio 90 MIDI keyboard ran through a E-MU Proteus 2000 sound module, - for the phat funky bass synth. I also used a KORG O5R/W sound module for the retro lead synth parts and ambient sound pads.I utilized what was essentially a old school Hip Hop drum track, arranged and beefed it up for that extra umh! I greatly appreciate all the positive feedback the track has garnered thus far.

Keep listening and by all means, your comments are much welcomed. On Sat 27th Aug 2016 -3 years agoReally like this song. The slightly off beat hits make it feel more human and less mechanical and give it that funky groove. All the elements work perfectly for this song. From the drums to the synths and even the guitar. The guitar part that came in at 2:08 (and I'm seriously nitpicking here), I feel it came in a bit too suddenly.

A very short fade in would help. Also when it eventually ends and cuts out, it feels like the extra layer of dynamics that came in with the guitars cut out too suddenly.

It could be due to the nature of how the sample was recorded with ambient noise, or a tad too much reverb. And I would have also liked the guitar to be used more but that's just my personal preference.Amazing work. Looking forward to some more stuff from you.-Sheen. Reply byHey Sheen thanks so much for stopping by and taking a listen, and also for your indepth review of this track. Glad you notice the slightly off beat hits (from time to time) due to the placement of where the percussionShakers would hit. You're correct in that I wanted a human feel along with the electronic/ funky sound. This is one of those rare tracks in which I actually wantedIt to be as short in duration as possible, yet have a great repetitive melody with a hard hitting drum track and a funky groove. As per the guitar solo it isn't a sample, it's actually a guitar part played by my buddy Art Miller.

For the way I arranged the tune since the main synth melody is encompassing the tune in such a manner whereas I had to do a 'get in / get out' approach with the guitar in order to keep the continuity. The sudden 'in your face' start of the guitar was purposely done that way for two reasons; 1. We actually did try it with a sort of 'pre-intro' but it didn't work.

Roger Troutman Patch Microkorg

With the 'just come in loud and sudden approach' it worked better because there wasvery little time to come in, do something semi creative and get out in time for the turnaround. Also at the end of Art's solo, he had sustained the last note for much longer than what you hear. So I edited the guitar note down and did a 'quick cut edit' and played a 'phantom note' on my keyboard and increasedthe reverb to give it that abrupt quarky effect. I actually like it personally, sinceit was meant to be more of a 'filler' rather than a full fledged guitar solo (for which Iget the biggest criticism of the teack for not making the solo longer).Overall I'm pleased with the end result. Thanks again for taking the timeto listening / review this track.Best RegardsD.

On Sun 5th Jun 2016 -3 years agoHey there Dennel, very smooth groove man! Very funky vibe, I particularly like the space in this track and the slow tempo, actually slow tempo grooves are the hardest to play (Imo) whilst keeping it all together especially for drummers in my experience! Reply byHey Dave so good to hear from you, yes I do use the E-MU Proteus on alot of my stuff as well as VST Plug in's through my recordingsoftware.

Per your situation with the 'Proteusx2' software; I was thinkingmaybe it's just a issue of finding the drivers? Though I would have thought that would've came on a cd or something when you purchased the software.I know when I went back to their site (it's been awhile back), that couldn't find any updates for my unit.

But there may be for your software, now that's the bad thing (for me) since they long ago stop manking the Proteus 2000 model, you can't find anything for it. My guitar player has a Protues Mo Phat module that I've been trying to get my hands on for years (lol). But overall I have always loved the sounds I could get from Proteus so it has been a main stay in my rack set-up.So glad you enjoyed the track and I certainly enjoyed your track as well. And it's been so nice to conversate with you after have being away from the site for so long.Wishing you all the best.D. On Wed 1st Jun 2016 -3 years agoSo after reading some of your replies. U n I are in the same frame of mind when it comes to music making.

I play my own synths as well as use loops. (Quick story) My 3rd year of college I joined the radio station and became a DJ, I came across an old promo of Roger Troutman (The Many Faces of Roger).

The station dismissed the promo and told me to keep it. But from that day on I was hooked. I followed his career until his very sad demise. You are correct he was very underrated for his work and multi-instrumentation. I agree with the masses that the guitar solo needs just a bit more as it's compelling and does break up the groove monotony.overall i still love it.Cru.

Reply byHey Cru thanks so much for your wonderful and in depth review. That was a great storyabout your having being a DJ in college andhow you got turned on to 'Roger Troutman.' So happy to hear you validate what I've beensaying for years, Roger was a very talentedcat! Bootsy Collins & Gorge Clinton may have gave Roger & Zapp their big break, but RogerWas definitely a superstar all his own! It's funny you say the first album you wereexposed to was 'the many faces of Roger Troutman,' (which was his first solo album)He did a cover of Marvin Gaye's 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' that was off the hook! Turned it into a funky dance track and pulled it off Lol!There is a series on BET called 'unsung' where they do stories on great soul & r&b artist. They did an episode on the life of Roger Troutman & Zapp, I'm sure you can find it online or youtube if interested. As for the track, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah the guitar solo may have been a tad short, lol.but as I have stated many times beforeIt was meant more as a filler rather than a all out solo.

And that has been the biggestcriticism of the track, lol and that's cool. Yes I guess we do have the same attitude and approach towards making music.I say there's nothing like getting what you really feel inside across to the listener better than what flows through what you're playing through your instrument. It is an extension of you. Thanks again for your great review and I'll be stopping by to check out some of your tracks as well.Best RegardsD.

Reply byHey Format (Your 'Rap' was impeccable, and I believe you just increased your inter-planetary-funksmanship to a whole new level.) Lol, though this isn't a rap track, I did use a 'old school Hip Hop drum track' as my basis and beefed it up for dat helluva kick! Since the tune is a little sparse, (meaning although I'm using some big soundscapes in the back drop, it's still not that much going on other than the repetitive melody), Which is why I needed a phat drum sound and a big phat funky synth bass to plug up the holes.Thanx so much for showing a brother sum luv and for the kind words, it was much appreciated.Glad you enjoyed the trackPeaceD. Reply byHey Fila what's up Man? For some reason I thought you had already heard this track when you posted comments on 'The Soul Music Radio Track'. Yeah, you know I had to go there with it, that old school electronic funk.

(lol) You say you can hear some of that (Ohih Players Funky Worm) in there eh? (lol) Thanks for the woderful compliment. On the funk side of it I was trying to pay tribute to my boy the late, great 'Roger Troutman' who is by the way very underrated as not only a great guitarist, but also as a muti-instrumentalist. He was like Prince, he could play everything. And I also was paying tribute to 'Bernie Worrel' of Parliament / Funkadelic fame. To listen to that brothers legendary funky synth bass riffs sends chills up my spine.

Roger Lynch

Flash Light, A Toast to the Boogie, Atomic Dog, etc. I truly, truly miss and love those days of 'The Real Deal Funk' and 'Classic Soul Music.' Thanks for stopping by andlistening and making it your fav.D.

On Tue 17th May 2016 -3 years agohelloI love your choice of sounds for this track and the fact that you actually used sound modules as sound sources. It presents really a difference in the quality (and in the very 'process' of making music I guess) when compared to virtual plugins. I became a fan of hardware recently and this makes me want to get Proteus module and expand my sound further. I saw few demos on YT, shame this one is no longer available.Very fine sounding and simply well produced track.Congratulation on making enjoyable music.Alex. Reply byHi Alex thanks so much for the kind words and for your review of this track. I do agree with you, there is a difference. Not that there isn't some good patches in software produced programs; but there is a difference in feel and sound with 'stand alone rack gear modules'.

Zapp

I incorporate both in my music; I also appreciate the fact since you are a musician yourself the difference in musicianship produce music as opposed to 'just utilizing loops'.And trust me I'm not knocking that because I do use loops sometimes in my music, usually drum loops. But you can tell the difference in a produced composition totally comprised of music from a musician there's just no substitute. As for the EM-U Proteus 2000 sound module, I have seen them on ebay from time to time or some variation of. EM-U also had this one great sound module called 'The Mo Phat', which was a unit comprised solely of every conceivable great sounding organ, keyboards and phat bass synths.

Can't find that unit anymore.I've been trying to talk my guitar player out his for years with no success I might add (lol). Once again thanks sofor your time in listening and for your great review, it was much appreciated. All The BestD. On Mon 9th May 2016 -3 years agoI think it belongs in the who cares what genre it is section.Very nice atmosphere and mood here. It's a scene setting environment. Another space in another place.

A comfortable place with the possibility of some sadness in there until that strange burst of guitar pops in and disappears just as fast as it appeared. That's my only criticism. The guitar should be twice as long or not there at all. Cracking piece of guitar mind.

It seems out of place though for the piece it being so sudden and so gone. I also agree this has a lot of room for some lyrics. A smooth velvety male voice. Talking or singing but deep and meaningful. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Reply byHey Silverman thanks so much for stopping by and giving your most thoughtful insights on the track. I guess the biggest complaint I get of the track is.

You guessed it, 'The Short Guitar Solo.' I have addressed this issue many times stating,it was meant more as a 'quick filler' to break up monotony, since the track is basically a ' Melody & Groove' driven song.Originally a 'synth solo' was to take the place of the guitar solo, but I couldn't come up with a tasteful one at the time, hence the guitar solo. I'm glad you noticed the atmosphere aspect of the tune, for which you are correct. I was trying to set a mood.

You are also correct in noticing a slight tinge of 'sadness' meshed along with the 'euphoric' feel of the track. From my prospective, it is quintessentialtruth that man is but a very small part of a much larger universe. And that there are vast civilizations amongts thestars for which he hasn't encountered.D. On Sat 9th Apr 2016 -3 years agoYo.Sorry, I took a while to review one of your tracks after you'd reviewed one of mine. This is some funky shit, with quite a retro (80s) type of funky synth bass and overall sound.10 secs in and people can already bounce to this in the club but it's not quite hip hop. Some sort of 80s g funk fusion groove stuff.0:07 cool lead sound. Quite far out and it's a good melody.

Busy metallic percussion to add to the basic fat kick-snare drums.0:54 I find that pad sound a bit light and cheesy. They're good notes and it's not a terrible sound - just could be better.2:08 now that guitar solo is just the new cool addition that the track needed as I wondered where it might go and if there would be anything new in the second half. But the solo is too short! Only 11 secs so it should be more like 30 (at least).Good stuff that people will enjoy.Congrats. Reply byLMAO! You know you've been paid a hell of a compliment when the reviewer starts the sentience out with, this is some funky shit!

Thank you for the compliment. Description: After a major uphill battle completing this song and turning it into what it is now, I feel some amount of satisfaction. It was like reality wanted me to give up or something. Have updated this almost completely, from repatching the modular bass, playing some guitar parts, adding electric piano and synth lead, redoing and tuning the DW-6000 synth, of course adding my vocals, and mixing and mastering. It really has become pretty new wave, like much of my stuff does recently.

Have added the lyrics as well. I am proud and happy with it, and I hope you all enjoy listening! Woohoo just broke 1000 plays on this track here at looperman!.original description.Hey finally here with a new track!

I'm not sure what to call this other than electronic, due to the high tempo. This is the first song finished using my interface which allows direct MIDI control of my modular synthesizer. The mid frequency bass part is all from that patch. There are tracks designed with my Zoom RT-123 drum machine, the microkorg, and the circuit bent KORG DW-6000.

Other than that it is just a kick and snare drum sample, and a a quick vocal snippet. So I guess it's fairly minimal in that respect. Would like to hear the Looperman community's thoughts on this song! Thank you for listening. Description: Recently I've been quite into future bass and this my first real try at making it.Looking forward to some constructive criticism.
