Hi all,My name is Morgan, and I am trying to help out my grandma but really need some help. She has been working on our family tree for over 20 years, and has more than 100,000 entries in her program 'Generations Family Tree Software' from Sierra Home. She desperately needs a new computer, and also updated software - as from my research 'Generations' is obsolete. Has anyone switched from this program to a new program? If so, I would love any help selecting a program to switch to as well as any info you have on how to export the data.I am 22, and very tech savvy, but this area is completely unknown to me and I would really like to be able to help my Grandma with this. Thank you so much for taking the time to read!.

I used to use Generations many years ago, too, and was bummed when they stopped making it/supporting it. I've tried a few different genealogy programs since then and the one I like the best is called Rootsmagic.

It doesn't have quite the same user interface, but it's the closest I've found to the Generations feel. I think there's a free version that she can try before buying, and if she does decide to go with it, there's a great user group on Facebook where she can get help if she has any problems.

Hope this helps. There are plenty of new programs: Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Family Tree Maker, Family Tree Builder, etc.I have used Ancestry (the program is in the browser, everything you add is saved online, although you can also save a GEDCOM file to your computer if you wish) and I like the format. Your Grandma might want to look at a few free programs and see which is the best or most familiar.

A relative of mine uses FamilyTreeMaker, which I believe is a program that runs separately (and without requiring internet access). In order to transfer the data, you will first need to export it. I don't have the program to check but there is supposedly an 'export' function which will create a GEDCOM (.ged) file. You can import.ged files into any other family tree program that I know of.
